I think John did a fabulous job in his welcome message of explaining what
an 'e-mail list' was and how to use this particular list. I've belonged
to a boating education 'e-mail list' for 3 years and it is so slaphazardly
used that I finally had to make a 'junk' file cabinet in which to file the
messages.
I learned more about how to use an 'e-mail list' from John's welcome
message than I've learned in all the time I've subscribed to the other
list. If you have misplaced your welcome message, I can send you a copy of
mine but I need a name and an e-mail address. A hard copy is laying here
on my desk as an instant reference.
The only topic heading problem I had was OT- ***. Realized just now it was
'Other Topics'.

Welcome to the list.
When you signed up, you got an e-mail welcoming you to the list. On that
e-mail are the subject tags, and the 'Rules' for using them. CULT: is
culture, but many use it to talk about cultivars instead of using the TB:
MED: AR: etc. tag. Some people use them to filter out e-mails on subjects
they are not interested in.
Also, please put your location and zone in your signature line...this helps
in answering questions because the answer may vary with where you are.
Other than that, we are a pretty laid back group (some exceptions).
Feel free to throw in your .02 cents worth at any time, and there are no
stupid questions except those you do not ask.

I am new to this list and am reading messages before jumping in.
Every list has its customs, in-jokes, abbreviations, etc.
But I have to ask: what does the header "CULT" mean in some messages?
