My poor irises look really dreadful - late freeze damage, month of
drought, followed by 2 inches of rain and air that is thick enough with
moisture to cut with a knife, and certainly not worth breathing, I would
estimate that 3/4 of the standing foliage is dead or diseased. I don't
have time or energy to trim the hundreds of plants I have, and usually
don't even think about it, but this year looks worse than usual
(probably isn't & I've just forgotten how bad they always look this time
of year).
If I mowed them with the rotary tractor mower, would the frayed leaf
ends just make things worse?
If they ever dry out again (which they surely will - bound to have
another monthlong period without rain before the summer is over) should
I try to burn the dead stuff off? probably not enough fuel to carry a
fire, but maybe I could walk down the rows with a drip torch....
