SHOW: UIS Show Results

The Utah Iris Society held its "main" show today at the Sugarhouse Park
Garden Center in Salt Lake City. Due to the unusually early bloom season
this year, many of the local growers did not have much bloom left to bring
to the show. As my garden is north of Salt Lake City and at a higher
elevation so that I am just approaching peak TB bloom now, this afforded an
opportunity that only comes once every four or five years to take a full
complement of stalks to the UIS Show.

The number of entries was somewhat below average, which may have been just
as well, since the roof covering about half the Garden Center was damaged
by the latest tornado to hit Salt Lake City (on Thursday evening). The same
storm system was rough on the iris bloom, not only in the Salt Lake area,
but in my locale as well. Nevertheless, there was a representative
selection of presentable stalks entered in the Show, with the following
results:

Best Specimen -- SONG OF NORWAY (Joe Brown)
Runner-up to Best Specimen -- HIGH BLUE SKY (Lavar Krantz)
Best Median -- LOW SPIRITS (Jeff Walters)
Best Beardless -- ROY DAVIDSON (Jeff Walters)
Best Seedling -- 1220-3 (Don Nebeker) - a very heavily laced
orchid-lavender on white plicata from LACED COTTON breeding
Sweepstakes Silver Medal -- Jeff Walters
Sweepstakes Bronze Medal -- Val & Barbara Wilson

I was glad to have the opportunity to take my irises to this show as I am
not sure I will have anything much worthwhile by the time our local show is
held next Friday.
