I have learned SO much since I've been on this list - my thanks to all
of you for your wealth of information - Sponges have nothing on me!
In view of the above, I would like to give some information back. Many
of you experienced growers may know this. For all you less experienced iris
lovers, here's my contribution.
There are a number of products on the market which contain NEEM OIL
which is extracted from the Indian neem tree. It works as an antifeedant
against pests and is a broad spectrum fungicide, insecticide and miticide and
seems to be safe to plants, wildlife and humans.
I use a product called GreenLight. Its active ingredient is Neem Oil,
90% with inert ingredients of 10%. In the (lengthly) literature that
accompanies it it says it prevents fungal attack of plant tissue, and is
effective against the prevention and control of powdery mildew, downy mildew,
anthracnose, rust, leaf spot, botrytis, needle rust, and scab.
It also is very effective in the control of a number of scales and
whitefly infestations. I can tell you it flat works on scales. My daughter
used it on her Stag-horn fern with incredible results.
I used this product on my iris when I lived in Arkansas. . I had leaf
spot big time. It was so effective that I was truly amazed. I have also used
it on downy/powdery mildew here in El Paso on my rosemary plants and my Bay
Laurel tree again, with extraordinary results.
I was an organic gardener in Arkansas and truck farmed 20,000 sq. ft.
of gardens. I had a greenhouse and with that came whitefly. . the neem oil
product was very effective in keeping them under control, (along with yellow
sticky cards.) It is also very effective against a multitude of other garden
pests but my primary usage was for fungal problems and those damn whiteflies!
I hope this will be of some help. Again, thanks for a great Iris-talk!
