Re: HYB: deciding what to cross

Definitely the opposite problem here... so far.

The median season is barely underway, but it is shaping up to be THE
outstanding year. I'm tempted to stay home from the convention. Almost
all of the year 2000 plants have put on excellent increase and have
spikes. There will be no bloom-out.

The MDBs have been fabulous. Few bloomed last year, they are making up
for it this year.

I'll be watching Blueberry Filly carefully. The plant looked weak last
year, but it has massed up very well and has enough bloom stalks for
both showing and hybridizing (if possible). Does anybody on the list
know if it is fertile?

I replanted Ruby Eruption last year into a sunnier location and have
discovered it is definitely a sun loving plant. Its blooms are far
brighter. I've been selfing it for a couple of years and hope to see
the results shortly.

The winter was long, heavy snow, no significant storms. The melt was
slow as well. I put out a soaker hose a month ago to encourage the JI,
an inspired move as it hasn't rained at all. Some record breaking
temperatures early on, but after the melt certainly encouraged
everything.

I'm not used to pleasant surprises. I'm sure the TBs will be dismal.

Regards,

Sandy Ives in Ottawa (z4ish, and we just got a mm of rain)
