HYB:lots of pods

Every year is different, but I am having an excellent percentage of
"takes" on my crosses this year. The only real exceptions were on Double
Vision (poor stalk with only two mushy flowers, neither took) and Best Bet
(4/10 for one cross and 1/4 on another). Other than that, I only had about
5 failures out of about 50 crosses. Of course, I'll be trying to rig up
some kind of planters for the seeds this fall/winter.
Double Vision would never be a parent for me based on garden
performance, but oh that rich pattern & color! Best Bet has my favorite
color combination (true blue neglecta), but lousy performance and mediocre
form. I hope to get an improved garden neglecta with good form, then will
cross to the best blues I can get to try to recover the blue range if it has
drifted into the purples. I hope it works. Most of my crosses this year
seemed to involve Ghio luminatas, and about 20 included my own seedlings.
Despite the shocking "ugly" ratio, it is a lot of fun to raise your own
unique iris. The hard part is ripping out whole rows of yecchy seedlings
(leaving ugly bare patches).
