OT-BIO: Ruth Vreeland

Hi everyone! I am a 41-yr. old mother of three, living in Albuquerque,
New Mexico, and I have been growing iris, and collecting more
(annually) since 1989 when my Grandmother died and left all of her
beautiful hybrids to her children and grandchildren. I've even begun
to try my hand at a little hybridizing myself.

My Grandmother, Margaret was married to Carl Quadros (a pretty renowned
hybridizer in California) in the mid-eighties before he died, so most
of what we as a family inherited were his hybrids, as well as others he
collected. I will be posting another message very soon regarding some
of the hybrids that we know to be in existence, but which we can't
locate. If you can help us out with this, we'd appreciate it more than
words can say, as these are our family heirloom, so to speak.

I love these iris as if they were my babies (and even my husband and
kids know that sometimes the iris come first!) I photograph them
constantly and have a collection now of very clear close-ups of the
nearly 200 varieties that I have planted in my yard. I have also
painted some of them, as I'm a fine-artist. . . awaiting the day when I
can retire from my job and just paint iris all day. . . every day.

It's nice to be involved in an-e-group like this! I already feel at
home just knowing you're all as crazy about these beautiful things as I
am!
