OT-BIO: Bob Hall

When it comes to the iris, I am as green as a new shoot. I had to move home a few years ago to take care of my Mom (recovering from lung cancer surgery & other illesses) & my stepdad (Alzhiemers). So when I discovered my Mom was passionate/nuts over the iris plant, I have decided to get more "into" them. However, our blooming season here in Oklahoma is over.

I am just a beginner, but from the looks of this list, I am on a journey to learn. My Mom's passion has rubbed off on me, and this season, I couldn't wait to get up in the morning to see what had bloomed. Since they are on a limited income, and have tons of medical bills, and I don't work, we dont' get to add many to our bed. Last year my love of red got to me, and I added only one, a red one called "Danger". When it bloomed I was so excited, I didn't know what to do. I didn't know whether on not I wanted to pet it, hold it, or just plain kiss it. I thought it had to be one of the most beautiful I'd seen. Last night I was up until around 3AM looking at iris websites, and saw so many colors and just wanted them all.

Since it takes a while for them to bloom when you plant them, I tell my Mom she will have to live one more year, just so she can see what they are going to look like. When she really gets sick I put her iris catalogs near, and she calls them her "wish books", and we talk about iris'. Soon, she gets to feeling better, when I remind her she will have to be there next spring to see the blooms.

I'm 51, live in Duncan, OK. I have fibromyalgia and peripheral neuropathy, so my gardening is somewhat limited. Taking care of them, and taking care of these stupid diseases limits my newly found love for iris'. But some day, we will have them everywhere I can get them planted.

I am wanting to so bad to learn how to do my own hybrids, but I have to wait until next spring to practice I guess.

I may not talk much, because I don't know enough to talk about. But you can rest assured, I'm here reading every word, and will be trying to learn as much as possible.

So glad to be here.

BOB
