Just my two cents in here, but, with film photography, each type of film has
its own color bias. The best one can do is to use one brand/type of film
for all photos so that any color that may be exaggerated is exaggerated
throughout and any color that may be subdued is subdued through out. Always
include something that will help with the color, in this case, perhaps some
foliage for the green.
With digital photography, each camera brand is going to have some bias.
There is not really enough experience out there yet to know (or , at least,
I haven't seen the comments) whether this will hold true just for a
particular camera, a manufacturers model number, or a whole line.
Once you get the photo on the screen in front of you, a whole other set of
factors comes into play. First, your video card is likely to show co.
Then, your monitor gets hold of the image and present s the colors in its
way. What you see on your screen is not what I see on my screen,
necessarily, even if we have the same video card/monitor combination.
Colors on a monitor will change with the age of the monitor (read number of
hours on) due to several factors, not least of which is that they may not
have shown the same color to begin with. The output of the video card is
more stable, but can be affected by the cable carrying the signal to the
monitor.
There are really too many variables (don't forget the compression of the
image when you place it in its final format as well) to say that what I see
is what really is, or what you intended to be. It really is a great wonder
that we get as close as we do to what we want--everyone seeing the same
colors. If you look at the photos on my familyszabo web site, there is a
noticeable (to me, anyway) difference between the original digital photo and
what appears after tweaking the photo to get a small size, suitable for a
quick download. More tweaking, and I might get it close, but it would never
be an exact match. (BTW, more photos coming soon--as soon as I have time to
tweak).
FWIW, I used to work with colors quite a bit, and I can't tell you how much
work it is to get two samples to be the same, as measured by a machine, even
with the same dye lots--it was really fun when a dye lot changed. I can
still see differences most people can't between two pieces of color, and my
other half (who also used to work with color in the printing industry)
usually agrees with me, though we might not agree on what it needs to be
made the same <g>. (Oh, the things couples find to fight over <GGG>.)
In the end, the only way is to grow the things yourself, and see what the
color turns out to be (and don't forget the environmental factors that also
seem to affect iris color).

I have yet to find any film that actually renders a blue iris blue, not
violet. I don't use a digital camera as I can't get one to give me enough
resolution without having to download after every 2 shots. I use
professional slide film (as this gives better colour accuracy), scan, and do
a bit of colour adjustment on my computer to get the photo a close to
original colour as possible, but not to make it artifical. I do this because
I don't like people buying something that looks violet-purple in the photo
only to find it's blue when it flowers. While many blue irises have a touch
of violet in them eg High Waters many are straight blues eg Clear Day,
Scented Bubbles, Sea of Joy, Marine Lustre, Fair Dinkum.
Some one commented on photographing barely opened blooms. I find that I have
limited time for photographing (between work, bad weather and having the
gardens open on weekends) and that was how the bloom was when I took the
shot. Over a period of years I will get a collection of photos of acturate,
fully opened blooms, but sometimes we have to make do with what we have. I'm
doing my best to give as acurate picture of the iris as possible.
As a consumer of iris catalogues (as well as a writer of them) I get
frustrated with new releases which give no indication of bud
count, increase and general health. But I must admit I don't buy anything
that says "not a quick increaser" or similar, which may be why it's not very
often stated. I do like Schreiners reporting of the bud counts on their
releases.
