Re: CULT: Trashing Irises

Friends;

I have discovered no ogres on this list, but rather folks who are
generous with information, seed, encouragement and sometimes a start of an
unusual cultivar. My comments about sharing were only in the service of
introducing some balance into the discussion lest we got too carried away
with disposing of undesirable plants.
Last fall I discarded a dozen common blue I. germanica types by
planting them on a barren clay bank of the stream that runs through the
common area of our neighborhood. They bloomed this spring, and in bloom were
stolen! So much for the wish for plants by those who don't have them, quite
apart from the crass individualistic selfishness that runs through our
culture.
The extra Pseudacorus and Lousianas that I planted in the very edge of
the stream are now blooming. They are not yet as conspicuous so may survive.
I trust all of you to euthanize those which should not survive because
of some truly inferior quality, or for commercial reasons when you do not
want your professional reputation associated with a specific
seedling/cultivar. I also hope we can encourage interest in iris and
gardening in general by sharing and several of you have most generously with
me.
