HIST: Victorian Veil at LAIS Show

The Louisville Area Iris Society added a historic iris section to its show
for the first time this year. There were two Groups: Classics - 1950 through
1971 and Antiques - 1949 and before. We were pleased to have eight entries
from five different exhibitors. There were five entries in the Antique group
and three in the Classics group. They were all nice specimens, representing
our iris history very well. We displayed a poster next to the section
explaining the significance of the section. There was a great deal of
interest shown by visitors and we intend to make this a permanent part of our
show. My guess is that there will be a lot more entries next year (if we have
a better growing season).

The Best Historic award was given to VICTORIAN VEIL (Tom Craig, 1950), which
happened to be one of only seven entries my husband and I were able to take
this year. (We had a very early bloom season and a heavy rainstorm the day
before the show.) This iris came to our garden from Forte's Iris Garden in
California. I was lucky enough to win a door prize they donated to the very
first Geek dinner at the AIS Convention in Oklahoma City. At my request,
Mary selected some historic irises and sent a generous box full. Several
bloomed last year but they all bloomed this year and are just wonderful!
Thanks again, Mary! V.V. had three gorgeous blooms freshly opened, and
against some stiff competition, she couldn't be denied.
