Hi Ken,
NARGS is an unreliable source for seed because it comes from so many
different people. If you know the individual supplier or gardener,
and know them to be well-versed in plant identification, then you are
likely to get the real stuff. Otherwise, it's a sweepstakes
situtation. I guess the same could be said of SIGNA!
My plant of lazica and the ones I saw in North Carolina conform well
to the description in the BIS species book, except for the longer,
branched stem on my plant, which could be due to its rather shady
position "drawing up" the stalk. BIS describes the stem as "very
short or absent." I have not seen the Davis and Jury 1990 paper,
which includes more detail in separating unguicularis and lazica.
But seeing them side-by-side would certainly confirm that they are
distinct.
