Unfortunately, this is not always the case. AIS judges vote for these awards
and some cultivars get enough votes from one part of the country alone to be
awarded AM's and even the Dykes. This means that some of these irises may
not grow well in other parts of the country. Other points to consider: Most
judges cannot grow even a small percentage of the new introductions every
year. Many cannot or do not travel to other gardens in their own region to
see them, much less travel to other parts of the country to visit gardens, so
they cannot possibly make evaluations on more than a relative few. Also, new
irises are eligible for awards before they have been given a chance to be
thoroughly evaluated nationwide.
I don't have a solution to the problem, and I realize that AIS is aware of
the problems with the award system. I simply wanted to illustrate why one
cannot always rely on an award winning iris to be reliable in any given area.
If you want to purchase irises hybridized by someone not in your own region,
you "pays your money and takes your chances"!
My 2 cents worth...
