Cathy, this was the first technique I used. I found it extremely difficult, 
and you have to keep changing toothpicks. I find the anther about as 
difficult to manage as a toothpick, and the pollen is already there, waiting 
to be used. You can also take it to several stigmatic lips before the pollen 
runs out. dried anthers are no harder to handle. I sometimes hold them with 
tweezers, but usually i can manage with my fingers, which are small and 
dexterous.
