The judges are supposed to be voting for the iris and not the
hybridizer.
It bothers me that sympathy or popularity figure into this vote, but
I know, in reality, for some judges it will be that way always just
as it will be for those judges who do not grow irises and rely on the
color catalogs and make their decision from looking at the pretty
pictures.
Of course, show stalks are supposedly not a factor in determining the
Dykes winner, but don't show stalks come from the garden? It is hard
to separate the two. In once sense, some judges will vote from what
they have seen win best specimen at a show. Others, will realize
that some irises are both garden and show irises, and that may figure
into the voting. So, I am voting for the one in my garden that shows
the best gardenability and pleases me the most year in and year out.
My vote will not be a sympathy vote or a popularity vote, and I hope
that will be the case for my fellow judges who still have their
gardens and are not in apartments, assisted living quarters, or
nursing homes.
