Monday was wet-wet-wet--I arrived about 9:30 at the airport, and it took
over 2 hours to get to the motel--the Super Shuttle is an experience!!! AIS
Board Meeting started at 1:00 p.m. that day--many reports--went to dinner at
Carol Warner's--so had time to look at her seedlings before we ate--Tuesday
was AIS Board meeting in the morning--then Section Board Meetings in the
afternoon--Wednesday was Section Meetings--where you want to be 2 or 3
places at the same time--then have nothing scheduled for the next few
hours--
HIPS had a great discussion concerning 'what to call the older
ones'--several people do not like the name 'antique'--but I am not sure what
was decided--there will be a report in the next ROOTS--they are also having
a rhizome sale again this year--contact a HIPS member for details--
I also attended the Dwarf Society meeting--and was taking notes 'cause the
Sect'y was not there--so now I am the new Sect'y--Hugh Thurman of Tennessee
is the new President--they auctioned off several of the MDB's brought by
Ginny Spoon--so I came home with 7 new MDB's--none over 3 years old--and a
SDB--
I missed a day of tours--'cause I was working on the silent auction--but in
the two days of touring, saw more MTB's than I knew existed!!!!! They
really seem to grow well there--and there was quite a variety of them.
the best garden? In my opinion--was Sterling Innerst's--his new house and
garden were great--too bad that it was raining all the time we were there--I
saw the 1909 'LORELEY'--really looks more like an MTB than a TB--and he gave
me a nice large start of it!!! So I came home with plants in my suitcases.
We also visited his old place-- he was told by the Realtor that no-one would
want all those Iris out there in the garden--so he dug them all up and put
in lawn--and who did buy it? An iris person--who is now taking out the lawn
and putting in more Iris beds!!!
Overall it was a good convention--not too large--only 10 buses of
attendees--many great buys in the Silent Auction--including 2 of Walter
Moore's--both went for a good price--and I did see several of his in the
different gardens--even voted for a couple of his for my 'favorite 15' iris
of the convention--
His 'Ascii Art' is outstanding--even with all the rain and wind--it did not
look as bad as many of the others not enough substance ones--and his 2
intros for this year look great also--
Everyone expected Sterling to win the cup for 'the best intro by a region 3
or 4 hybridizer--and he swept all the top awards--but he deserves it--all of
his Iris looked great--and all the rain did not seem to bother them--guess
it is better to have rain during conventions--then you can see how well the
flowers will hold up under adverse conditions.
Still unpacking--and wanting to see all the SDB's who burst out the minute I
was gone--
