As somebody already noted, elbow grease is the old-fashioned way, and still often the best. For weeds, IF you are careful, you can use a small foam brush (less than 30 cents at the hardware store) and brush a Roundup or Spectracide solution on the leaves. Don't try to spray in the beds. Those 2 chemicals will kill grass, too, but it's hard to use them on grass in the beds. For grass in the beds, there are chemical sprays which will kill the grass without harming the iris. One I know used to go by the name Ornamec, not sure what it might be now. Farmers use these sprays all the time in their soybean fields around here, chemicals they get from the farm supply store under names like Poast or Fusillade. No doubt there are others, too. Indiscriminate spraying never recommended, however. They will take a couple weeks to do their job, so don't expect instant results with these grass-killers. Spectracide will work in 24 hr. or less; Roundup takes a little longer.
