Thanks for the comment, Jim. That could well be the reason. I planted my guest bed about Sept. 17, and they bloomed in April.

I usually don't get my plants until late Aug or early Sept so they don't
have a really long time in the ground before the next bloom season. Most of
my fall planted rhizomes this year were in the fans, a couple of notable
exceptions being Mesmerizer which put up two 4 footers, and Timescape, which
was lovely before it blew over. Almost all the others (35) were in the fans
or just above.
