I would be very surprised if it turned out your NOID was Argus Pheasant. I
grew AP for many years, and it had a lovely form. This one you show has
fairly smooth color, but a blush in the fall I have not seen in brown
irises, nor do I recognize the form as familiar.
I am quite sure it is not one of Dr.Kleinsorge's nor from Schreiners, two of
the few major breeders introducing brown irises. Even those who introduced
browns but on a minor scale, such as Tell Muhlestein or Gordon Plough, would
not be the source of this NOID. It could be a Sass variety, but I doubt
that too.
I am tempted to suggest it is a local chance seedling that got passed around
in the Knoxville area.
Just out of curiosity, do any of the Knoxville folk remember an iris
grower/hybridizer that I believe once lived in the Knoxville area by the
name of Andrew Moore? I understand he is in Texas somewhere now.
