HYB: substance & crunched up blooms

Anybody know what causes blooms of some cultivars with a lot of
substance to have problems opening/expanding? I assume it's one or more
of my environmental/garden stressors, but don't know if it's cold, lack
of adequate moisture, heat, root diseases or all of the above.

Are all cultivars with heavy substance prone to this when stressed?

Poor substance is characteristic of most of the older cultivars and most
of the seedlings I've bloomed so far. I have one with excellent
substance that started trying to open yesterday and has that typical
crunched up horrid look. Looks like it might expand into something
resembling an iris bloom, but I don't like it.

I can post photos of what I mean by 'crunched up horrid' if anybody
hasn't seen this not so attractive type of bloom. How common is this in
other parts of the world?

Bill, you are so right - every cultivar is an adventure. And each
year's climate is totally different - never know what it's going to be
like.
