When you get this far down South, we call the phenomena you describe, 
"scrunched" up. Kinda' like when only a few people in a neighborhood had cars and all 
the kids were piled in the back seat regardless of how many. The word seems 
to have its root in childhood years when we "scrouged" in line at school.

I have no answer to,"Why?". Some scrouge on occation, some don't. It does not 
seem to be a substance or size issue with irises here.

As a point in passin', I've have noticed little people can somtimes "scrouge" 
in line and go unnoticed. Maybe this says something about the relationship 
between terminal bud counts and crunched up.
