Re: iris change color over time?

This sort of thing happens with the broken colour iris. They mutate more often then regular iris do. The comonest reversion is to a regular plicata. Sometimes this mutation can transfer to a regular rhizome and become a stable plant. I have gotten regula plicata plants from Batik and Alpha Gnu. Also a regular near black from Batik.

But no whites.

What about broken color irises like Millenium Falcon? I thought somebody gave me this ugly plicata the first year it bloomed for me. The next year the broken color set in. However, one flower had falls that was half broken color and half ugly plicata. This struck me as odd since there was 3 falls and 2 does not go into 3 evenly. One flower was divided down the middle. I am sure this says something important about how the flower formed but I cannot think of what. Wish I took a picture. Millenium Falcon seems to be a bit
unstable, at least here in the desert.

This question comes up on a regular basis. No evidence has ever been

your answer. Extensive discussions can be found in the archives.

I've been growing irises, thousands of registered and introduced
irises, over the past 25 years.

Not once has an iris changed color in my garden. Some tint variation
is normal depending on soil chemistry and temperatures. Deeper,
darker, or lighter. But not a change from some color to white.
