I have used PVC pipe as plant labels. You can go to an irrigation supply store and get broken ones for free. They cut easily with a chop saw. I cut them 18". I use Elmers Painter Stick to write the name of the iris on two sides. Sharpies fade too much. You can also buy Avery Weather Proof labels (special order at Office Depot) and print using a laser printer and stick them on the PVC pipe. The nice thing about PVC pipe is they stay put. However, they are not very attractive. Metal markers are attractive but get pulled out by the watering hose. Plus you have to pay money for them. I now use PVC pipe for the seedlings and metal markers for the rest. Good luck.
