Okie Iris


As a transplanted Okie, I can't resist adding a brief observation to Tom's tale.


Oklahoma provides a great testing ground for iris:  winters may be cold & wet or
cold & dry and summers may be hot & wet or hot & dry.    Nice averages, of
course, but the numbers don't show how changeable the weather really is.
"Moderate" is probably the word least apt to turn up in a weather report!

Call it  "natural selection" if you like, but Oklahoma's climate does serve to
eliminate varieties that can't take the extremes.   Not only does that help
Oklahoma hybridizers select  for gardenability, but it gives varieties from
other parts of the country a chance to prove themselves.  There are other
