That deer in the headlights is also called "the thousand mile look" when
speaking to children. It's a complete denial of the situation, found
especially when dealing with children in a traumatic situation, as in parents
being arrested in the presence of squallar and drugs. Children protect
themselves by going off a thousand miles and that shows in their eyes..
