Here is an initial list of the species that Bruce gave me. He was
excessively generousm, in my view! As I mention below, some of the
names should be up-dated and one or two I am not sure about. As the
plants are substantial, mature clumps, this collection will
significantly advance my reference material and allow me to leap frog
over the rather slower process of developing most of the collection from
seed.
My wife and I spent much of a day with him. He has not yet left his
farm, where he has lived 50 years, to move to his daughter's house,
which is on the other side of the next field. He is still fit, at 87,
and very much on the ball, although a little deaf. He is still raising
TB irises for the annual plant sale of the CIS/RBG. In addition to the
above material, he has a collection of Junos in pots which he will take
with him when he moves.
I was surprised to see that he is growing a lousianan (nelsonii) in an
unheated greenhouse. The most spectacular sight was a large tectorum in
full bloom in a heated greenhouse.
