Several later bloomers looking more or less normal after repeated hard
freezes here earlier. VANITY is as always, gorgeous. CRYSTAL GLITTERS and
WINDWALKER had no damage (their first year for me). I was warned that C G
has rot problems in our climate, and she does have a lot of foliar damage, so
we'll see. HARVEST OF MEMORIES is open (also its first year) - wonderfully
fragrant, but the standards are kind of in disarray. JOYFUL NEWS is
gorgeous, as always, but one flower with 4 falls. SULTRY MOOD looks great,
also WINDSONG WEST, JAEL'S CONQUEST, BAYBERRY CANDLE, SOUTHLAND GRAPE,
SULTAN'S PALACE, FALL FIESTA, MONTEVIDEO. WINTER OLYMPICS is stunted, as is
HONEY GLAZED. Poor JESSE'S SONG tried its best to bloom, with stalks all
heights and degrees of damage, and one stalk of QUEEN DOROTHY made it through
and bloomed normally. There will be more late bloomers that look like they
made it ok. Lots of dead buds, non-bloomers, and damaged foliage out there.
The MTB CAROLYN ROSE bloomed, but is only 6 inches tall.
I've toured several other gardens in the area so far, and the degree of
freeze damage is highly variable - two gardens had very little damage that I
could notice at all. The Couturiers' (Sunnyridge Gardens) looked even worse
than mine, though that may be because they have more early and mid-season
bloomers. Discouraging. The Parkhill's garden was wonderful.
