If I could have only one iris, bearded or beardless, species or hybrid, it
would be, without question, QUAKER LADY, introduced by Bertrand Farr of
Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, in 1909. This is a lovely smaller (27") diploid
iris, with beautifully shaped crisp-textured petite blooms. The standards are
a warm, translucent cocoa and the falls have a complex iridescent overlay
which results in a luminous lavender effect. Virtually impossible to
photograph well. The throat and beards are golden, and the entire bloom seems
gold dusted. The plant is vigorous, trouble free, and increases well and in a
tidy manner that produces very attractive clumps which integrate nicely into
plantings of perennials, or can stand alone as a specimen. The proportions of
the entire plant are perfect; the stalks are strong and straight, the shape
and placement of the buds is very pleasing, the foliage is attractive. It has
a nice long bloom season. I love this iris very much because it is a
beautiful, magical little flower, and a superb plant in all respects.
