Dear Kathy,
I have grown up in Clackamas County, Oregon and spent all my days here and
my first flowering Iris was a wild one that grows all over western Oregon
called I. Tenax and it ranges in color from orchid white to very dark
purple many times right next to each other. I have always grown it and
will always keep it in my garden. I have some interesting seedlings from
it and its cousin I. Tenax Gormanii(a yellow version) that are showing some
promise now in the 3rd & 4th generations having been crossed originally
with I. Douglassiana.
Now if you want me to state my favorite bearded Iris (That's tough) my vote
would probably go to one that has stood the test of time and still no one
has been able to make a more modern version of. Everyone will recognize it
in a garden any times it blooms. It is called BAYBERRY CANDLE by Caroline
DeForest. 1969. She gave it to me a long time ago and wished me good luck
in my Hybridizing efforts. I grow it today in memory of her and for the
fact that there is nothing else like it.
