TDF: I. pseudocorus 'Beuron'; NPR and Culture Shock

Yesterday, I. pseudocorus 'Beuron' opened. It is in the middle of my bog
garden, surrounded by shorter LA's and Japs, none of which are close to
bloom. I first saw this selection last summer and was quite impressed
with it's tall strapping blue foliage and had to have it--immediately.
What the flower lacks in size is more than compensated for by height and
brilliance. Just catching a glimpse of it from 50 yards away is quite a
treat. This year, there are only 8 bloom stalks and only 3 flowers have
opened, so far. Having that one very tall yellow flower surrounded by
the Japs and LA's reminds me of the following story:

In 1990, National Public Radio ran a segement on All Things Considered
called "Culture Shock". A caterer, named Bradley Harrison Picklesheimer,
working a posh society party, describes one renegade yellow flower in a
most anal-retentive planting of blue flowers. As they were rushing
around before the party, the hostess came out of the house, steadied by
a silver-handled cane. She surveyed the situation, lifted her cane and
pointed to the little yellow flower. In a commanding, but scratchy
voice, she said "That one THERE. Get it." A gardener rushes over and
removes the offensive yellow flower. The narrator adds: "And that's all
we saw of her."

I taped that segment and often play it for friends. In case you haven't
figured it out by now, I'm rooting for the little yellow flower.
