The recommendation (as given in the policies) is that subscribers take up
policy matters with me off-list. I don't mean that to sound like
censorship. There's no prohibition involved. Posting about policies and
"list culture" on-list is permissible, it's just not usually to be
preferred. The reason for the recommendation is that all mailing lists face
the same basic issues (complaints about off-topic posts, complaints about
rudeness, complaints about complaints...) and these issues generate a
fairly predictable pattern of response. The result is that 10 days and 200
postings later we're back where we started--recognition the simple fact
that different people have different preferences regarding how the list
should work. It saves a lot of bandwidth (and keeps us more iris-focused)
if we don't have these threads going all the time. Furthermore, some such
debates can get testy. It avoids hurt feelings to handle them privately.

So there is no subject tag for postings about list policies--a deliberate
omission. If you do decide to post on such a topic, don't worry about
putting a subject tag on the message.

Regarding list mechanics, there is no good reason for ANY postings on this
subject to appear on-list. If you have a technical question about how the
list works (unsubscribing, going on digest, rejected messages, etc.) the
thing to do is (1) see if the answer is in the welcome message, then--if
you still have a question--(2) contact the list owner.

Cheers, Tom.
