Hi Everyone!
The Utah Iris Society is holding its "main season" iris show with the
theme "Westward Ho!" today and tomorrow (May 24 & 25) at the Red Butte
Botanical Gardens visitors center in Salt Lake City. This is a truly a
spectacular site for the show with the beauty of the iris displayed against
the background of panoramic views of the Wasatch Mountains visible through
the soaring glass walls of the visitors center.
The Queen of the Show was a robust stalk of MYSTERY STORY with 4
well-placed open blossoms in perfect condition exhibited by Joe Brown of
Tooele. Runnerup to Queen was a stalk of TANZANIAN TANGERINE entered by its
hybridizers, Brad & Kathie Kasperek. The silver medal for Horticultural
Sweepstakes was taken by the Kaspereks, while the bronze medal went to
Darlene Pinegar of Spanish Fork.
It was a privilege for me to be able to judge at this very fine show. The
difference in bloom seasons means that the Salt Lake show comes a bit early
for iris growers in far northern Utah, but I was able to select eight
stalks to take to today's show (4 TB, 4 IB) on which I received 6 blue
ribbons, a red, and a white.
Among the cultivars entered that particularly impressed me were THORNBIRD,
OREGON SKIES, BLACK FALLS, NIGERIAN RASPBERRY, RAPTURE IN BLUE, MOTHER
EARTH, and POETIC.
