Hello, spuria fanciers! I have a basic culture question. The spurias are
through blooming in this bed I'm watching. Should I remove the spent flower
heads and pods? Do I take off the bloomstalk as we do for TBs? If so, is it
better to use Bill Shear's wiggle-til-it-breaks method, or the "anti-rot,
cut-it-a-few inches-up-from-the-base-at-a-node-if-possible" method taught
by my local club for TBs?
I have no pride whatsoever so I will confess I tried wiggling one flower
just below the tube that leads to the seed pod, which was swollen. I
couldn't walk off and leave it: No volunteerism allowed in this bed. The
stem wouldn't break and it wouldn't break; so finally I bit it. My incisor
missed the tube and hit the pod, and some of the seed got on my tongue. The
texture reminded me at first of old okra, but then came an aftertaste I
would never accuse old okra of imparting. Eeeew.
What do we do about spent bloomstalks on spurias? And please, don't say,
"Don't eat them!" I know that already. :-)
