And she is correct. This plant is endemic to Europe, including the Britain,
and is found in N. Africa and into SW Asia and China. It was brought to this
area of the country early in the seventeenth century from England, where it
was cultivated extensively. Indeed, the distribution map contained in the
Virginia Atlas of Flora shows it has become naturalized in areas of early
settlement by people from the British Isles---another non-native species. It
was also carried over the western Virginia mountains and is now found in the
Southewest corner of the state as well. I imagine the same sort of thing
occurred in New England. It does a superb job of sopping up water in low
places and is, as I said apparently pretty salt tolerant around here.

A short trip to the archives will uncover several vigorous discussions of
this species in the past year or so.
