A bog garden accommodates those plants that "like their feet wet"---e.g.
yellow flag, and sarracenia (pitcher plant). Per Harry Phillips in Growing
and Propagating Wild Flowers (UNC Press, 1985), one needs to establish a
water table just inches below the surface: Punch 3-4 drainage holes in a
dishpan halfway up the side and cover with a piece of screening. Bury the
dishpan within a few inches of the rim, and fill it with whole-fiber peat
moss. Fill it with water from a gently flowing hose; check to make sure the
drain holes are working. Let the peat moss settle a few days, then place the
plants. The idea is to guarantee a water supply in all seasons and full sun.
