Thanks to Dennis for some tips on the problem with stunted bloom height of
Japanese, but I'm a bit confused on the subject of bog gardening and Japanese
iris also.

I translate this to mean that the farther south one is trying to grow these
critters, the less they can tolerate saturated conditions.  I assume that
means the roots are trying to grow all through the winter here, and can't get
enough ?oxygen.  From some earlier posts, I gather that later in the year,
when the whole plant is growing, the soil needs to be drier than a swamp no
matter what part of the country they're in.

even the LAs didnt' fare too well this year - I think the warm spell in the
middle of the winter with all the rain, followed by repeated freezes was hard
on them all.  LAs are growing well now, but earliest blooms were damaged.
