Re: Colder than Marte :-)

Ellen:

Belated thanks for advice re ants & ant-killer. The big black ones
probably are carpenter ants & I used the Diazinon because my husband
(who used to be a carpenter --*grin*) suggested it. I tho't, from
reading, that Dursban was more for bugs living in the soil rather than
on it???

Yes, weather's becoming my secondary hobby, too, right alongside
gardening. Haven't paid so much attention to temps, wind & potential or
actual snow/rain since I lived & worked in a ski town! I'm zone 4 in
Colo., w & s of Denver (z. 5), in what are called foothills tho' alt.
where I am is 7,400': Colo. high country (real mtns) starts few mi
further at 8,000 to 15,000'. When I lived in that ski town (slightly
more than 8,600') I didn't even attempt gardening except in containers
that could be whisked indoors. The "official" growing season there is 88
days, so you can imagine what reality often was.

There are many Colo. sayings re weather, but my 2 current favorites are
"We have only 2 seasons: snow removal & road repair" (which I 1st heard
attributed to the Twin Cities, rather than here!) & "We have 9 mos of
Winter & 3 mos of bad skiing." I also recall a friend who claimed he
missed Spring because he was in the bathroom that afternoon...

And I do know that large parts of Canada are milder than here (my mom's
Canadian & I have tons of relatives there, mostly in Manitoba & B.C. + 1
that was in the Yukon til he moved south -- to Edmonton!) But
nevertheless, I too, prefer to live & garden in a cold climate, maybe
cause I have little experience in any other (1 year in Dallas 25 yrs ago
doesn't really count.) Anyhoo, my personal comfort zone only ranges from
about 65 to 75 degrees; otherwise, I tend to wilt, never mind the
flowers.

Marte in the mtns, where it's 45 & has been raining all day which is why
I'm on the computer & not out in the dirt.
