Hi Audrey,
I read in ROOTS that the purple iris that blooms everywhere and all the time
in California is Crimson King. I have an iris that I'm pretty sure is
Crimson King and this is what it looks like: IB, dark purple standards,
darker purple falls with a red-violet sheen, white beard going to yellow in
the throat surrounded by white haft markings and floppy old fashioned form.
The other one that is supposed to be around a lot in California is Eleanor
Roosevelt which doesn't have as prominent veining around the beard. I have
ordered named varieties of each this year, so when they bloom you can come by
my garden in Atascadero and check them out. Or next spring go see Rick Tasco
and Roger Duncan of Superstition Iris Gardens out in Cathey's Valley (near
the entrance to Yosemite), they have those varieties PLUS a bunch of gorgeous
arilbreds. Also you can check out sources for arilbred irises on Tom Tadfor
Little's homepage: http://www.rt66.com/~telp/garden.htm

P. S. I heard there was a commercial iris grower in Paso. Do you have any
information about them?
