Hey Ellen... I can't speak for NALS, but AIS DOES, very definately, notify
the RVP when a new member joins! I get a list of new members on a monthly
basis... plus any changes. It is up to me to then send a welcoming letter to
the new member... along with information about local clubs and Regional
activities. I get a list of people who are delinquent in paying their dues
as well, so I can address that. Twice a year, I get an ENTIRE run-off of
all the members in my region so I can compare it to my records.

If you were not contacted when you joined AIS... the fault is NOT with AIS!

When I am notified of a new member, this is what we do.. our Region, Region
2, developed a Membership Handbook that goes to each new member. We've
sub-titled it "Everything You've Ever Wanted to Know About the Empire State
Iris Society, But Were Afraid to Ask". In there we include information about
judges training, our acquisition program, sales and auctions and what the
member's relationship is to AIS, the Region and to the local club. I also
include a WONDERFUL article that I received from Rich Randall years ago that
was printed in their Newscast. Very friendly article about being in AIS and
growing irises.

I agree that LOCAL contact is important to membership.... and THAT
responsibility belongs to the RVP or to his/her Membership Chair.
