Sally,
Welcome to the list from a long-time lurker! Your posting brought me
out of the shadows. I'd like to know where in Southeastern NY you
live. We are starting a new iris (and daylily) club in the Hudson
Valley. We are going to have our first iris show this Sunday at Adams
Fairacre Farms in Poughkeepsie. Since we are all new to this and none
of us has ever done a show-- or belonged to an iris club before, for
that matter-- we have decided to make this one more like an exhibition
than a real show. We will have an accreditied AIS judge in attendance,
but he will be giving judges training and teaching us the finer points
of showing. Then next year when we have our first real accreditied show
some of us will think we know what we are doing. This is a great
opportunity to learn something about irises directly from someone who
has a lot of experience. You are welcome to come. If you have any
irises in bloom that you would like to "show" just e-mail me today and I
will either phone you with the details or write. I think this is a
great opportunity for beginners because we definitely want to use this a
learning experience and eliminate all the pressure and competition from
the process this time. I have some unnamed TB's in bloom that I will be
bringing. They are just gorgeous and the public should love them even
without a name. And perhaps they will get a name at the show. Hey. Ya
never know! Also we have a great group of people!
If you live anywhere near Poughkeepsie, we'd like to meet you. If you
would like to attend some of our monthly meetings, we meet at the
Poughkeepsie Galleria generally on the first Sunday of the month at 1:00
for our businees meeting and 2:00 for the program. We are planning to
have an iris rhizome and perennial sale at the Galleria mall on August
10th and if you would like to pick up some new irises at bargain prices,
particularly TB's that should be a good place to buy.
Our members come from quite some distance. Our club is the most
souteastern in New York State. North of us, in the Albany area is the
Capital Hudson Iris Society. If you have time, getting involved with a
club is one of the most pleasant ways to share the love of irises,
besides subscribing to this list, of course!
