Training is two-fold.
1. Encroaching on off-limits territory, like an iris bed, means getting hit
with a stream of water from a water pistol or spray bottle -- or any handy
beverage you're willing to sacrifice. (Of course I did have one that developed
a taste for Coca-Cola....)
2. OTOH, staying in legal territory means strokes -- verbal & physical. And
there MUST be a legal "sand-box" area that's more appealing than iris beds.
It's easier, of course, to train 'em young. Sometimes compromise is necessary.
Our current watch-cat liked to sleep on the shadecloth suspended OVER iris beds,
even though it sagged with his weight. Rather than try to break him of the
habit, we fixed a reinforced platform for him in each garden. More comfortable
for him, better for the iris, and much easier on our nerves. With him on duty,
no stray dares come into the garden!
