Re: HIST: Happy Birthday

Anner's account of the historic irises she encountered in
Richmond's alleys is always a joy to read and a tribute to those stalwart,
often neglected, irises of yesteryear. That they have survived so long is
indeed remarkable as nearly everyone wants the newest and 'best.' Thanks,
Anner, for the tour.

I would like to say happy birthday to two irises that joined the
historical ranks this year.

NEW MOON, Neva Sexton '68, bloomed today with two flowers open,
and is as 'modern' looking as she was thirty years ago and could be
queen of the show if a show had been held today. The lemony yellow self
with slight lacing and wide branching was far ahead of her time in 1968,
and there is no wonder this iris went on to claim the Dykes' Medal. I
could not begin to count the times NM was queen in a Ft. Worth or Dallas
show. Happy birthday, NEW MOON, and welcome to the historical elite.

STUDY IN BLACK, Gordon Plough, '68, turned thirty this year, too.
A tailored deep red black, this iris converted a lot of people who had
only a casual interest in irises in to full blown, card-carrying AISers.
Often with three flowers open, she was a contender for the best black in
local shows. Never upstaged by her lack of ruffles, she has a color
impact that has continued to charm iris fanciers over the years and will
for years to come. SIB was awarded the AIS Award of Merit, and she and I
brought home the best black trophy several times from Ft. Worth shows.
Many happy returns.

As Anner says, "Don't let the old ones slip away." Add these two
to your collection!
