Re: Bloom Report

From: "S&C Rust" <srust@fidnet.com>

A nice large three year clump of I. florentina is blooming now. Slender
stalks, fluttery flowers, nice, nice scent. Swertii is very distinctive
with its triangle edges and the plicata color is dainty on this historic
variety. In contrast, the historic Gudrun is huge and a good stark white.
This one always holds up well for us and blooms every year, regardless of
the weather. Newer SDBs blooming for the first time include Ringer and Plum
Lucky. Deep, saturated color on these and Ringer has starchy substance.
Ringer is deep brown and yellow plic, Plum Lucky is a velvety purple. The
two IBs from England, Bronzeaire and Mary Constance make a stunning
contrast. Mary Constance is a much darker blue than I thought she would be.
Bronzeaire is well named. English IBs seem to have bigger flowers than I
expect in the class in America; so does the BB Orinoco Flow, which has a
beautiful bud and flower, but the flower is very big for the class in my
garden, although the stalks are short enough. An older TB rebloomer, Red
Revival is in bloom and it is a red from the rusty side. Bonus Mama, a
newer white TB rebloomer is blooming in huge clumps in several places.
Latin Lark from Barry Blyth opened for the first time, and it is a screamer.
Queen Dorothy, a short plicata TB rebloomer is open and looking good. Misty
Twilight has a beautiful show stalk and bloom up...this was the first iris I
ever had that rebloomed and it is a very high quality iris. I have a
magnificent photo of it reblooming in October on a newly planted plant with
a huge show stalk and four perfectly placed open blooms. In the arilbred
department, there are two quarterbreds ready to open tomorrow: Butterfly
Wings (could not resist the name!) and Sara Mohr. MDBs Flea Circus and
Puppet Baby still hanging in there. The broken color IB Hubbub opened today
and looks to have fertile pollen. The flower I have tagged as Ask Alma is
definetely not Ask Alma. I saw Ask Alma in several area gardens yesterday
and mine is too big and too pale. That, I see, is another plus for garden
visiting! More tomorrow...

Cindy Rust, Missouri, Zone 5b P.S. Late Lilac open in a nice clump...very
dependable lilac with soft red beard rebloomer...
