SIB: Seedlings

From: "Leroy Kriese" <ambrosia@silk.net>

I have not been following much by way of plant robins lately but I caught
your posting Jeff.

Your comments on germination sequence following plant bloom sequence are
interesting, obviously plants follow their natural sequence and cycles
even at the germ. stages, which makes sense. Weeds seem to do it too and of
course there is
lots of them starting now. You have your winter annuals, your cool season
annuals, your hot season annuals, then your winter perennials, and
correspondants.

To get back on track I would like to obtain a Siberian called Blue Hyacinth
which would be good to cross to the early Sib selection. Does anyone in
Canada have this one? Or seed would work too I suppose.

I don't know what this early Sib really is, it is now a mystery. It came
as I. sanguinea but due to help from various people on the robins I have
deduced that it is
definitely not I. sanguinea since it is multiple branched. The MDBs are just
coming into bloom now and I. typipholia has buds coming and the early Sib
selection right behind. I divided off a few pieces last fall so it may be a
bit behind this year.

I have only seed germinating of Allium albo-pillosum, Allium cyaneum and
seed from a Salvia x superba selection so far. We have been very cool this
spring, still snow falling at higher elevations on the mountains and frost
in the valley. Hostas in the shade are just emerging and I did notice frost
damage on some and on the MDB and SDB blooms and some cell bursting or
intercellular water on the bearded iris. Due to an enormous snowpack this
year our local usually placid stream looks likely a raging torrent and the
melt has not really started yet.
