Re: TB: Dying Buds
From: Sandy Ives <rives@home.com>
Last year I had iris borer in the buds of several cultivars, including 'Dakota
Moon'.
They were in the 2nd/3rd instar, not large, but certainly enough to destroy the
bloom if not the spike.
I am not sure Cygon is called for in this situation. Even if you use the
chemical, the damage has been done, you probably can't get the high percentage
kill necessary to keep the rhizomes clear, and you risk all beneficial
predators.
This didn't stop me from trying. In my situation, I tagged and dug all such
affected cultivars plus their neighbours. I did discover additional borer in
these cultivars.
Garden hygiene became even more important. I took far more time than usual last
fall in response to the threat.
So far this year, we are clear.
Has anyone tried using a Shop-Vac in the fall to collect garden debris.
Seriously.

Sandy Ives in Ottawa z4ish Canada.
