As peak bloom season sweeps across this grand nation, many of you will be
struck with 'iris blues.' Not late blooming blue irises, but iris
withdrawal. You've traveled over hill and dale in search of iris adventure,
but now it's over, or soon will be. Many have successfully hybridized the
days away (Dennis comes to mind) or not (me-too few iris blooms and too many
storms).
While the senses are reeling with the beauty of irises, and before the
memories grow too dim, I'd like a report. Not a bloom report, but a
perfection report. I'm not looking for the perfect iris, but near perfect
irises. All colors, all patterns, and all hues.
These irises need both garden presence and bench presence. They should have
it all: Height (32 to 38 inches), stalks (center branch straight with curved
branches & NO falling stalks, PLEASE), branching (show bench), bud count
(7+), domed standards, and flaring falls, nearly horizontal. Oh, yes.
Substance like plastic. This is MY definition, and I do not attribute it to
anyone else. To each his or her own.
Thank you one and all for your participation. Oh-yes. Don, I like copper
colored irises, but not copperheads.
