Three buds in the terminal are not terribly unusual. It it definitely to be
preferred as it extends the bloom season. You could get 9 blooms if you had a
terminal and two branches that have 3 buds each. I had it happen with
seedlings the first couple of years I grew them, but I don't notice them that
frequently these days.
