We all need to keep in mind that there has not been a great deal of testing in
the courts (referred to as a "body of law") of the rights and ownership of
email that is sent to a public forum like iris-talk. While I do not claim to
be a legal expert, nor have any training in the field, I do have friends that
are well respected in the field. They say that in a forum such as ours,
especially because the archives are accessible to any one, that anything we
send to the list is public domain.

As I remember, there have already been exerpts from iris-talk posts in the
bulletin, but I don't know if permission was always requested (and I know of
one particular case when it was not).

Though I personally do not think it is required legally, I always ask
permission of anyone whose email I want to quote. I think common courtesy
demands it, and I think it is appropriate for us all to follow that rule. The
AIS BOD, or any other entity certainly did not need our permission to vote to
want to include gleanings from iris-talk, but I would certainly hope that who
ever provides the quotes will ask permission of the relevant author(s).

On the other hand when I reply to the iris-talk on a particular post, I do not
ask permission from the original author to quote them in advance of my
response. I am sure someone will say "Oh, but that's different." Well maybe,
maybe not, but I think it points out that things can get a little twisty in
this new electronic world.
