IRIS:OKC
From: "Carryl M. Meyer" <carrylm@bigsky.net>
Thought that I would put my two-bits in also with another report of the OKC
meeting--
Thursday morning we arrived at Perry's--and his flowers did suffer from the
hail storms--iris really funny to look at what should be an Iris, and see
only style arms--thank heavens he had trees there, and the ones under them
were protected and looked good-- I went wandering to the back where he had
many old friends--among the grasses--and they were growing and blooming
nicely--in spite of the competition--Perry's intros for the next frew years
are spectacular!!!!!!! Ghost--2001--is fantastic--his did well in his
yard-and everywhere else!!
As one 'debussed', right in front at the end of the row, was PHAETON-by
Marky Smith--and what a color--sorta bronze-persimmon--and you can see it a
mile away!!
Also in Perry's yard, I saw Suttons'--Alabaster Unicorn--do not know if it
should have horns or not--but what substance!!! There was another white
near it--looking very bedraggled--and the next day it still looked great!!
The idea of going to a garden two times is good--seeing a bloom two days in
a row is great!!!
We were on a green bus--and our driver just overshot a few of the gardens,
but nothing drastic--alsoon the bus was Diana Winship and others from
Texas, so we got to find out what is in store for us next year and see
pictures from Bonnie of a couple of the yards on tour--
Colorado persons were on the bus too--and Margaret and George Sutton--who
really had a good show of many of his--and Tom Burseen--if anybody does not
know Tom--that is their loss--he is a wonderful person--as well as having a
funny mind to think up the names for his Iris--
Brad and Kathy Kasperek were there too--many of his looked good--
I was really surprised at the terrain there--did not expect such lush
undergrowth and all the Oak trees--guess I expected it to look like the
cattle drive country from John Wayne movies--sorta desert like--and a lot
dryer--
The RVP for there--Louise Carson --and I visited and discussed the climate
and terrain--and why people stay there and go through the tornadoes--that
one was enough for me--I'll take the icy roads and winter snow anytime--
Overall--best Irises were from Marky--Paul Black, George Sutton, Perry,
Keith Keppel, and of course Terry Aitken--
Even though my interest has changed from TB's to Medians and Historics, I
still enjoyed seeing the many different TB's--think we were there at about
peak--
Came home to about 20 SDB in bloom or just about to burst forth--but it has
been snowing almost every day--
Twas great to meet the other 'geeks'--and put faces to names--some of them
I have seen for many years at the meetings, and just never knew who they
were--The Geek-dinner was great, and worth all the planning by John and
Kathy--am already looking for something to take next year--
Carryl in western Montana--Zone 3, where it is down to upper 20's at night
and a few snow flakes every morning
