Your experince in this is not unique. I've seen a lot of those things that
look like that. In fact, most of them do after a few years.
I think you have to weigh expense against mean time to failure, factor in
aesthetics, and look at all options. I'm using the little zinc shrub
markers--just a little one piece stick in thing--that the usual folks offer,
and, while they are acceptably unobtrusive, they are flimsier than I was
expecting, and I'm not wild about them.
